Catalog of the Works of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina: A New Project

The Roman composer Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (1525–1594), through his musical output, left a far-reaching mark on church music, music theory, and compositional practice. His influence on music history started during his lifetime and can still be felt today. Although scholarly treatment of his oeuvre began back with the Cecilian movement in the early 19th century, the field still has gaps in many areas even today. Most notably, we still lack a scholarly catalog of works that is based on comprehensive research of the sources. Such a resource would lay the groundwork for a variety of musicological projects, act as a foundation for creating critical editions of works, and also serve as a bibliographic tool for historically minded performances.
A new project aims to fill this gap: Verzeichnis der Werke Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrinas. Online-Datenbank mit textkritischer Darstellung der Quellen (Catalog of the Works of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina: Online Database with Critical Presentation of the Sources), which was launched as a DFG-funded project on January 1, 2017. Under the direction of Prof. Dr. Peter Ackermann and based at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Frankfurt am Main, all relevant bibliographic data about the ca. 800 musical works–for which there are currently around 10,000 sources scattered worldwide–will be cataloged in a database developed especially for this project.
In addition, the most important sources for each work will be rendered digitally using notation software. Each source will be available to users, enabling source-specific readings of the works (see image above). Finally the database will offer, in addition to the usual search capabilities, the ability to comprehensively search the music for musical parameters and structural relationships.
The novel aspect of this project involves linking a catalog of works and sources to a visual and source-oriented display of the music in digital form, which in contrast to a printed catalog can provide extensive points of departure for researchers and more versatile and easier-to-understand ways of presenting information. For musicians, the catalog will allow them to choose between variant copies of a work that reflect different local, institutional, and historical parameters. The resource will therefore be equally suitable for both scholars and performers.
