We were happy when this very RISM-rich issue of IAML’s journal Fontes Artis Musicae crossed our desks, featuring the following articles:

• “Johann Walter Werke Verzeichnis [JWWV]” by Robin A. Leaver

• “The Music Manuscripts in the Church of San Francisco de Quito: An Undocumented Collection” by Jesus Estevez

• “Father Hilario Olazarán of Estella (1894–1973): Cataloguing His Musical Works” by José Francisco Sánchez Salsamendi

The JWWV catalog is a list of Walter’s 293 works. It has at its core the successive printed editions of Walter’s important Chorgesangbuch, also variously printed as Geystliche gsangk Buchleyn and Wittenbergisches Gsangbüchli. It was printed in a total of four editions and three reprints. References to JWWV have been added to the RISM records, including the manuscripts found in RISM.

We currently do not have any records from Ecuador, which makes knowing about the article by Jesus Estevez all the more valuable for us: detailed descriptions of the 38 manuscripts found at the church. In February 2020, a conference will take place in Loja, Ecuador. See this PDF for more details. Thanks to our RISM working group in Córdoba, Argentina, a RISM cataloging workshop will hopefully be featured as part of the conference, which would be an invaluable opportunity to begin some RISM projects in this musically rich country. Watch this space for more information.

Lastly, the article by José Francisco Sánchez Salsamendi casts light on current research on the life and musical activities of Father Hilario Olazarán of Estella, who was active in Spain (Basque country) and Chile. We hope that a full account of his compositions will be made available.

• “The Music Manuscripts in the Church of San Francisco de Quito: An Undocumented Collection” de Jesus Estevez

• “Father Hilario Olazarán of Estella (1894–1973): Cataloguing His Musical Works” de José Francisco Sánchez Salsamendi
