RISM Data as Open Data and Linked Open Data
Thursday, April 16, 2015
RISM data have been available as open data since 2013, and as linked open data since the summer of 2014. The RISM open data are available on the linked open data page of the RISM online catalog. This link allows you to download the entire batch.
What does this mean?
It means we want our data to be not only widely seen but also widely used.
Open data means that all of the data in the RISM online catalog are freely available, licensed under a Creative Commons license, in MARCXML format for unrestricted access and unrestricted reuse in other projects. In 2014, the data were released as linked open data in RDF format. Linked open data allows you to bring datasets from different databases together.
The Detmold Court Theater project uses RISM’s open data as a basis of indexing music holdings based on MEI (Music Encoding Initiative) and TEI (Text Encoding Initiative). Kristina Richts and Peter Stadler will be reporting on this project during the RISM session at the IAML congress in June. More and more digital projects are starting to use open data, such as Europeana, DBpedia, Getty vocabularies, and the Sheet Music Consortium.
If you have any questions about using the data, please contact us: contact@rism.info. Please also see the RISM Data Services page, with a brochure (PDF) that you can print out.
