Cats in Music
Friday, August 8, 2014
Today is International Cat Day! With RISM, you can find all the music you need to celebrate in style.
If International Cat Day had started 200 years ago, musicians could have enjoyed these pieces, from RISM series A/I (printed editions before 1800):
• Charles Dibdin: The cat, a new song (RISM A/I DD 2432b)
• Wenzel Müller, Die Katze läßt das mausen nicht. (RISM A/I M 8034)
• Jean-Benjamin de La Borde: Le chat perdu et retrouvé(RISM A/I L 69 L 68; LL 68)
Cats are everywhere in the online catalog, as are Katzen, chats, and a gatti. As the German cats say, Miau!
Below, Elaine Comparone plays Scarlatti’s Fugue in G minor, later dubbed “The Cat’s Fugue” by Muzio Clementi.
